From 25 – 27 May, we will be offering a free viewing to P&L members of the 2017 Documentary ‘Dispossession: the Great Social Housing Swindle’ https://www.dispossessionfilm.com/ followed by a discussion with director/producer Paul Sng, chaired by housing campaigner Tom Murtha, on Wednesday 27 May at 730pm. The discussion will cover how the film was made and the future of housing activism and policy locally and nationally, including in the light of the covid epidemic.
The housing crisis remains at the top of the political agenda, its scale laid bare by the Covid-19 epidemic . But despite the media spotlight, the stories of those affected by the chronic shortage of social housing in the United Kingdom, including in Tower Hamlets, have often been left out of debates on housing.
Dispossession focuses on the stories of those affected in exploring the agenda behind the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates in the U.K. over the past thirty years. The film reveals how individuals and communities, including in Tower Hamlets, are fighting against the state and private developers, as they try to save their homes from demolition, while investigating the decisions that turned a crisis into a tragedy.
Dispossession is the story of people who know that housing is not an expensive luxury, but a fundamental human right.
